Hello Friend,

This summer has been one for the books—inspiring, life-giving, magical, heart-breaking—and it isn't even over yet.

I was recently undone by Boomerang Valentine, a poem by the late Andrea Gibson, who muses on this question: What if you are the love of your life?

As Gibson wonders what it would be like to engage with oneself and become the kind of unhinged [that] only love makes me, I feel my own world of self-criticism and self-knowing begin to unfold before me. That is the sort of summer I've had. Unhinged. Delightful. Intense.

I love falling in love (which is something I'll be writing about in an upcoming Substack post), but when it comes to loving myself, I feel both the expert and the amateur. How can I love me when I also say so many terrible things to me? How can I romance myself with flowers and magic and self-affirmation, when I spend so much time thinking about how I said the wrong thing, offered the wrong sort of help, or missed the opportunity prove myself necessary?

To truly, deeply, and unabashedly love myself feels like the best and hardest thing I could do. So that is my mission for this final few weeks of summer—to begin falling in love with myself the way that I might with another person.
